You are one step closer to making your course accessible and inclusive to all individuals. This course is an extension to Canvas Basics by Taft College Distance Education. This course provides an introduction to the basic principles of accessibility within Canvas Instructure, the methods used, and why we use them.

What is Accessibility?

Accessibility is creating a physical and technological world to be more inclusive to all individuals (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, 2023). By doing so, we must focus on publishing content that is perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust to all users. By being more accessible, our institution can be more inclusive to individuals who have underlying conditions that inhibit their abilities to efficiently access our public content. By being mindful of all people and your content, students, faculty, and staff can have equal opportunity and access to web content.

Why is Accessibility Important?

According to the CDC, roughly 61 million adults in the United States have some type of disability that impacts their daily life (2023). Of this data, 12.8% struggle with a disability that inhibits their cognitive functions, and 63% struggle with a disability that inhibits their mobility, vision, or hearing. Section 504 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 have set standards and requirements that institutions, such as Taft College, make an inclusive educational experience and digital environment to make our content perceivable, operable, understandable, and robust with ease (Rehabilitation Act - ca Department of Rehabilitation, 2023). In doing so, our campus is advised to follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 A/AA standards.
