Week 1 Module Research: Mine your experiences to support your ideas

Research, as defined on Dictionary.com is "diligent and systematic inquiry or investigation into a subject in order to discover or revise facts, theories, applications, etc."

In our course, we inquire and investigate, in many ways:

Personal Experience:
1. We dig deep into our memories to mine our own personal experiences related to the subject matter on which we plan to speak.
2. We interview close friends and family to mine their personal experiences related to the subject matter on which we plan to speak.
Speaker's Notebook: We collect stories and facts that are of interest to us for later use.
Library Research: We do traditional library research related to the subject matter on which we plan to speak.
1. Thought-provoking stories on our subject
2. Expert testimony on our subject
3. Surprising facts about our subject
4. Statistics related to our subject
We learn to cite all sources of information we plan to use, whether personal or library-based, to avoid plagiarizing ourselves or others.

This week's graded research tasks

1. Raw research for your quotation speech: Mine your personal experiences to develop your responses for the raw research assignment for your quotation speech. This activity should take you 90 minutes over the course of a few days. Don't expect to complete this assignment all at once.
