The quizzes for your readings in this course were developed by Bakersfield College Professor Heather Silvis. She will act as your guide in the memoji video at the top of each quiz.

In college courses, the reading load is heavier than most people can manage if they try to read course texts the way they would read a novel. Here are some tips from Kelci Lynn Lucier on ThoughtCo that you can use to become a more effective reader in college-level classes:

Determine how to make progress in your assigned readings (everyone is different, Professor Lucier provides suggestions to help you experiment and find what works for you).
Schedule reading time
Read effectively.
Know that you can't do everything.

To share the reading load with members of a study group:

Upload a PDF to your Google Drive (New>File upload or click-and-drag the PDF into your Google Drive).
Click the PDF to preview it.
Click the share button in the upper right to add other people or get a link to share. Make sure you choose "comment" as the option for viewers. Share the link via the Canvas Inbox with members of your group.
Click on the annotate icon in the upper right to start adding notes. Highlight text or illustrations throughout the document to comment on them.

Trick your brain into holding information from a textbook:

Read the chapter introduction and chapter conclusion
Read through the glossary terms for the chapter
Quickly skim the chapter. Read the headings, look at the pictures and diagrams, and read the information about the pictures and diagrams.
Do something else for at least an hour.
Return to the reading. At each chapter heading pose at least 1 question about the section that you would like to find an answer to when you read the section. Then, read the section, searching for the answer to the question you've posed.
Highlight important ideas and write in your text. Here's a video that explains how to highlight and take notes on a PDF in google docs:

If you follow these steps when you read your textbooks you will find that you learn much more quickly and you spend far less time staring at and re-reading the same paragraph on a loop.

Reminder: Chapter quizzes are open book and you have 20 minutes to complete each quiz. You can also re-take each quiz for full credit immediately after you complete it.
